In 2001, a Hispanic Ministries Task Force was created at the
Broadway United Methodist Church. The intention of the ministry was
to work with the Latinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in order to study
existing services and gaps in services for Latino families living in the
community.
The task force sought the assistance of a well-established Latino
family in the area. Maria Rodriguez, a member of this family,
eventually became the first Centro Latino employee.
A collaborative relationship was established with the Council Bluffs
Community Health Center. In exchange for office space, the Centro
Latino was able to offer interpretation services at the health clinic.
The task force also determined that it was a priority to offer child care
for parents, especially young mothers, while they attended English as
a Second Language (ESL) classes at Iowa Western Community
College (IWCC). Broadway United Methodist Church did and still does
provide the space for our evening childcare program.
In 2005, Centro Latino of Iowa was officially created, becoming a
501(c)(3) nonprofit social services organization.
Centro Latino staff dedicates a great amount of time to interpreting
and translating for our clients. We are a "communication bridge"
helping to link Spanish-speaking community members with the
services they need.
